What is music theory?
Music theory is the very foundation of music making, covering the rules on how to read and write music correctly. By understanding how music works, how music is put together, we can perform unfamiliar styles, master new techniques and develop the confidence needed to try new things on our instrument.
Who is this course for?
Children / teenagers who are currently working at grade 3 or higher on their instrument. They know they want to move onto Grades 6-8 in the future on their instrument and therefore need their Grade 5 Music Theory qualification, or simply they want to understand the building blocks of music to find it easier to play new pieces. It doesn’t matter what instrument they play, music theory is universal to all instruments.
What would my child learn on this course?
I follow the content of the ABRSM Music Theory syllabus. Depending on where the child is in their musical journey depends on where I pitch my teaching. Simply let me know where they are in their journey and I can teach from there!

How do I teach?
I’m a primary school teacher with a Masters degree in Education and use my experience and knowledge of best practice to support my music teaching. When I teach, I assess where a child is in their knowledge, break down new concepts into manageable chunks and use games, whiteboards and flash cards to support my teaching.

When, where and how much?
At my house in Southdown, Harpenden.
Monday 5th – Wednesday 7th August 2024 , 9am – 1pm each day
Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th August 2024, 9am – 1pm each day
£170 per course includes:
- £40 worth of materials and textbooks including practice papers
- 12 hours of small group tuition
- Dedicated marking and feedback of any practice papers completed between the course and exam date
